| | EBOOK PROTECTION What is ebook protection?
Ebook protection, as a term, requires a little more definition if we are to understand what it means.
In a separate article we discussed secure digital books, and it is useful to consider what we might mean by secure, because that will give us a very good clue as to what protection might mean.
Secure is an interesting word. In many languages, security and safety mean the same thing, and there is only one word for both of them. In Russian secure and trustworthy are the same thing. In French, security and safety (and the French police) all use the same word. (You might start to worry why in English we are so picky about which word means what?)
Obviously, say, if the book is about medicine, we trust that the information on it is safe – that the content can really be relied upon and that no-one has slipped in some completely wrong text in the hope that the reader is unbelievably stupid and might follow the instructions. The same would go if it is financial investment advice (although you could argue it’s harder for even the expert to know if it’s right or not). But certainly the ebook protection should give us confidence that the ebook comes from where it claims, and that it hasn’t been altered.
Ebook protection may address further security requirements for the publisher as well as for the user, such as who is entitled to actually use the ebook, and whether they can transform it, copy it, obtain printed copies and so on.
We therefore conclude that the term ebook protection describes the concept of protecting an ebook in order to produce particular security solutions. Ebook protection is the result of applying the security requirements to an ebook in order to produce a result that is consistent with the needs of the ebook publisher. See also ebook encryption.
